Solar and battery rebates for Sale homes in 2026

Which solar and battery rebates Sale VIC households can claim in 2026: the Solar Homes rebate and loan, the federal battery discount, STCs and the 2027 change.

Three incentives are open to Sale households in late 2026. Solar Victoria’s Solar Homes rebate cuts up to 50% off the purchase cost of a solar panel system, to a program maximum, with an optional interest-free loan. The federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program takes around 30% off an eligible battery, and small-scale technology certificates (STCs) discount almost every new solar system at the point of sale.

Sale Solar is a referral service, so it cannot lodge a rebate for you. The independent installer you choose prepares the quote, applies where needed and installs the system, and only a Solar Victoria authorised retailer can upload a Solar Homes quote.

Which rebates can a Sale household get right now?

Incentive Who runs it What it covers How you get it
Solar Homes solar panel rebate Solar Victoria Up to 50% of the purchase cost of a solar panel system, to a program maximum Apply through Solar Victoria with an authorised retailer’s quote
Solar Homes interest-free loan Solar Victoria A loan matching the rebate amount, repaid over 4 years Opt in when you apply for the rebate
Cheaper Home Batteries Program Australian Government, administered by the Clean Energy Regulator Around 30% off the upfront cost of an eligible battery Usually taken off the price by the installer or retailer
Small-scale technology certificates Clean Energy Regulator, under the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme An upfront discount on new solar panels, shrinking each year to 2030 Usually taken off the price by the installer
Solar Victoria battery loan Solar Victoria Closed No longer taking applications

The Solar Homes rebate is calculated after other discounts such as STCs have been taken off. The published price averages on the Sale cost guide already include STCs but not the Victorian rebate.

Who is eligible for the Solar Homes solar panel rebate?

Solar Victoria’s solar panel rebate page sets out the conditions. In summary, you must:

  • own and live in the home where the system will go, or own a home that is under construction
  • have a combined household taxable income, across all owners, below the program cap
  • own a property valued below the program’s property value cap
  • not have received a Solar Homes solar panel or battery rebate at that address before
  • not have had a solar panel system installed at the address in the last 10 years
  • use a Solar Victoria authorised retailer and choose products from the program’s eligible list

Landlords are not left out: Solar Victoria runs a separate rebate stream for rental properties, with its own page and conditions. Because the caps change from time to time, check the current figures on the Solar Victoria site rather than relying on an old brochure or a directory listing.

How do you apply, step by step?

The order matters. Doing a step early can cost you the rebate.

  1. Research and choose a retailer. Pick a Solar Victoria authorised solar retailer and products from the eligible list.
  2. Network pre-approval. The retailer gets pre-approval from AusNet Services to connect the system and checks any export limit.
  3. Written quote uploaded. The retailer uploads your written quote to the Solar Victoria portal.
  4. Prove eligibility. You upload proof of identity, income and property ownership.
  5. QR code issued. Once Solar Victoria confirms you are eligible, you receive a QR code. The installer scans it on site before any work starts.
  6. Install within the time limit. For an existing home, installation should be finished within 120 days of the QR code being sent. For a home under construction, the limit is 270 days.
  7. Pay the balance. You pay the retailer the price less the rebate.

The rule that catches people out: if your system is installed before your eligibility is approved, you will not receive a rebate. Hold off signing a written quote or handing over money until Solar Victoria has confirmed you, and make sure any deposit you do pay can be refunded in full.

How does the interest-free loan work?

If you want to spread the cost, Solar Victoria offers an interest-free loan equal to the rebate amount. Since 1 May 2026 you choose the loan at the time you apply; you cannot add it later. No collateral is needed. Repayments are monthly over 4 years, taken automatically from your bank account, starting 30 days after your installation is approved.

What changes for Victorian solar support in 2027?

On 17 October 2026 the Victorian Government announced that household solar support will move into the Victorian Energy Upgrades program from 1 July 2027. The current Solar Homes arrangements stay in place until 30 June 2027. Solar Victoria says the program has helped more than half a million Victorian households over nine years. The Solar Victoria announcement is the place to watch for detail on how claims will work after the switch. If you are close to deciding, applying under the known rules before mid 2027 removes one unknown.

Two other dates from the Victorian Government’s electrification standards page are worth knowing if you are planning work on a house:

  • new homes are to be all-electric from 1 January 2027
  • in existing homes, gas hot water at the end of its life is to be replaced with an efficient electric system from 1 March 2027

Both raise household electricity use, which makes solar sizing more important.

What battery rebate is available in Victoria?

The state’s own battery support has ended. Solar Victoria is no longer taking applications for interest-free battery loans, and directories that still quote a state battery amount are out of date.

The incentive that remains is federal. The Cheaper Home Batteries Program opened on 1 July 2025. The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water says households, businesses and community organisations can get a discount of around 30% on the upfront cost of eligible small-scale batteries, that changes to the program took effect on 1 May 2026, and that the discount will decrease over time until 2030. The Clean Energy Regulator administers it.

In most cases the installer or retailer takes the discount off your price. You can instead create and trade the certificates yourself, but then you must not assign that right to the installer. The battery has to meet product and installer rules for the discount to apply; those rules, and how battery size affects the discount, are covered on the home battery installation page.

How do STCs work for new solar panels?

STCs come from the federal Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme. When an accredited installer puts in an eligible system, certificates are created for the expected output, and installers usually take their value off your price rather than leaving you to sell them. The detailed rules sit in the federal renewable energy regulations, which are published on the Federal Register of Legislation. The number of certificates a system attracts falls each year until the scheme ends in 2030, so the same system costs a little more each year it is delayed.

To qualify, the installer and designer must be accredited by Solar Accreditation Australia and the panels and inverter must be on the approved product list. Those checks are part of a normal quote for solar panel installation in Sale.

What if you are building a new home in Sale?

Owners of a home under construction can apply for the solar panel rebate. Solar Victoria suggests raising solar with your builder at the planning stage, so consent, roof access and the timing of the application line up. The longer 270 day installation window applies. The Solar Homes hot water rebate is not available while a home is under construction. Planning a system for a new build is covered on the solar for new homes page.

Common rebate mistakes

Mistake What happens
Installing before eligibility approval No Solar Homes rebate
Using a retailer that is not authorised The quote cannot be uploaded to the portal
Choosing products not on the eligible list The job fails a program condition
Paying a non-refundable deposit early Money at risk if you turn out to be ineligible
Missing the 120 or 270 day window The job falls outside the program time limit; talk to Solar Victoria early
Forgetting to opt in to the loan at application The loan cannot be added later
Relying on an old directory listing for battery rebates The state battery loan is closed

Next step: ask for a rebate-ready quote

When you send a rebate quote enquiry, tell the provider:

  • whether you own and live in the home, or are building
  • that you want a Solar Homes rebate, and whether you want the loan
  • whether a battery is part of the plan
  • your suburb, roof type and a recent power bill
  • whether solar has been installed at the address before, and roughly when

A provider that is a Solar Victoria authorised retailer can then prepare a quote in the right order for the application.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get the Solar Homes rebate if I already have solar panels?

Not if a solar panel system was installed at the address in the last 10 years, or if the address has already received a Solar Homes panel or battery rebate. An older system may not rule you out, so check the current conditions with Solar Victoria before you request a quote.

Can I claim both the Victorian rebate and the federal battery discount?

They cover different things. The Solar Homes rebate is for solar panels, while the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program discounts an eligible battery. A household installing panels and a battery together may be able to use both, provided each program's conditions are met.

Does Sale Solar apply for the rebate on my behalf?

No. Applications are made with an authorised retailer, which uploads the quote to the Solar Victoria portal, and you upload your own eligibility documents. Sale Solar only passes your enquiry to a local provider.

What happens to the Solar Homes rebate after June 2027?

From July 2027 the support is due to be delivered through a different state program, Victorian Energy Upgrades. How claims will be made under it has not been fully set out yet, so check Solar Victoria before you plan a purchase around that date.

Are the income and property value limits the same every year?

Solar Victoria can revise them, which is why this site does not quote them. Check the current limits on the Solar Victoria rebate page on the day you apply.
