Home battery installation in Sale

Adding a home battery in Sale: sizing it from overnight use, battery only versus AC coupled, where it can go and how the federal battery discount works.

A home battery stores surplus solar from the middle of the day so the house can run on it in the evening and overnight. In Sale the sensible size is set by how many kilowatt hours the household uses after dark, and the cost depends on whether your existing inverter can take a battery directly or a second inverter is needed. Installed prices for a 10 kWh battery averaged $7,784 to $8,284 per system nationally after the federal discount, and the discount gets smaller each half year. Sale Solar does not install batteries: your enquiry goes to an independent local installer, who checks your system and quotes for it.

How big a battery does a Sale home need?

Solar Victoria’s battery buyers guide says the right size mostly depends on three things: the size of your solar system, how much energy you use overnight and whether you want backup in an outage. For bill savings, a battery that charges fully on most days and empties most nights earns its keep better than one that sits half full.

A practical way to estimate overnight use:

  1. Log in to your electricity retailer’s app or online account and download half-hourly or hourly usage data.
  2. Add up use from about 5pm to 7am for a typical winter week and a typical summer week.
  3. Compare that number with how much solar you export on an average day. A battery can only store what the panels produce beyond daytime use.

If a winter night uses 12 kWh but your 5 kW system only exports 6 kWh on a June day, a large battery will sit partly empty for months. East Sale averages 4.4 hours of sunshine a day in June, so winter charging is the limiting factor for many homes. In that case, a provider may suggest adding panels at the same time; the solar system upgrades page covers expanding an older array.

Usable size Suits National average installed, after federal discount
About 10 kWh Couples or small families with moderate evening use $7,784 to $8,284 per system
About 20 kWh Larger all-electric homes, heat pump hot water running at night, EV charging $14,972 to $15,772 per system

These prices come from the Solar Choice battery price index for August 2026. Each range runs from a battery-only install (low end) to a battery plus its own inverter (high end). Solar Choice notes the figures do not usually include meter installation fees or the extra cost of a difficult install, so a Sale quote may differ.

Battery only or AC coupled: which set-up fits?

How the battery connects depends on the inverter you already have.

Set-up When it applies What changes on site
Battery only (DC coupled) Your inverter is a hybrid or battery ready model The battery plugs into the existing inverter; less wall space and wiring
AC coupled You have a standard string inverter A separate battery inverter is fitted beside the battery and connects on the AC side
Hybrid inverter swap plus battery Your current inverter is old or faulty and due for replacement The old inverter comes off, a hybrid goes on, then the battery connects to it

If your inverter is already eight or ten years old, an installer may suggest replacing it with a hybrid model as part of the job. Energy Matters prices a hybrid inverter upgrade for a typical home at $2,500 to $4,500, fitted. The inverter replacement page covers that decision in detail. Solar Victoria’s guide also points out that modular batteries can often be expanded later, but expansion tends to be harder in a DC coupled arrangement, so ask about it before you choose.

What are the rules for the federal battery discount?

The federal energy department’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program page puts the discount at around 30% off what a qualifying battery costs to install. The discount comes as small-scale technology certificates (STCs) that the installer usually takes off the price. The Clean Energy Regulator’s battery page lists the conditions the system must meet:

  • the battery is new, made within 12 months of installation, and not previously installed
  • nominal capacity between 5 and 100 kWh in a single job
  • the model is on the Clean Energy Council approved battery list
  • it complies with AS/NZS 5139 and Victorian electrical safety law
  • it is technically capable of joining a virtual power plant
  • an SAA accredited installer with a battery endorsement fits it
  • only one battery is eligible at each premises, once

Two details change the size of the discount. First, STCs are only counted on the first 50 kWh of usable capacity, and the rate tapers: full value up to 14 kWh, 60% for each kWh above 14 up to 28, and 15% above 28 up to 50. A 20 kWh battery gets less discount per kWh than a 10 kWh one. Second, the STC factor per kWh steps down over time.

Installation period STC factor per kWh
May to December 2026 6.8
January to June 2027 5.7
July to December 2027 5.2

A battery installed in late 2026 attracts more certificates than the same battery installed in early 2027. Solar Victoria no longer takes applications for its interest-free battery loans, so the federal discount is the main support for batteries in Sale. The Sale solar rebates guide explains how the state and federal programs fit together.

If your existing panels are not on today’s approved list, that does not stop you. The CER says an existing solar system does not need to be on the CEC approved product list, though it must still meet state electrical safety rules.

Where can a battery go?

Siting is where careful installers spend time. AS/NZS 5139 is the Australian standard for installing battery systems, and the installer will plan the location against it, looking at the wall, the surroundings, exposure to direct sun and the distance to the switchboard and inverter. Energy Safe Victoria asks owners to keep wood piles, paint and other flammable liquids away from inverters and batteries, which rules out the corner of many garages and carports as storage once the battery goes in.

What a careful installer will check before quoting:

  • switchboard condition and whether it has room for the battery circuit
  • the existing inverter model, age and whether it is on AusNet’s approved list
  • a wall that is strong enough and out of afternoon sun
  • whether the household wants some circuits backed up in an outage, which changes the wiring

Backup changes the design, so if you want the lights and fridge to stay on in a blackout, say so up front. The battery backup power page covers outage design.

Is a battery worth it compared with solar alone?

That depends on your evening use, your feed-in tariff and how long you stay in the house. The solar only versus solar and battery comparison sets out the trade-offs without promising a payback period.

What happens after the battery is installed?

A battery energy storage system is prescribed electrical work in Victoria. An independent Licensed Electrical Inspector must check it before it is switched on, and the installer then issues you a Certificate of Electrical Safety. If you are offered a virtual power plant plan with the battery, read its contract terms separately from the installation quote. Homes on larger rural blocks, such as dairy properties around Maffra, often have longer cable runs from shed to house that the installer will need to see.

Next step: describe your battery job

When you request a home battery quote, include:

  • your suburb and the size of your existing solar system in kW
  • a clear photo of the inverter label showing brand and model
  • a photo of the switchboard and the wall where you would like the battery
  • your evening and overnight use, or a recent bill
  • whether you want backup in a blackout

A local installer looks at what you send and quotes on its own terms.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add a battery to solar panels installed ten years ago?

Often yes, provided the existing system is safe and compliant. An AC coupled battery with its own inverter can sit alongside an older string inverter. The installer will inspect the old system first, and any faults found on it should be fixed before the battery goes in.

How long does a home battery last?

Battery life is set by the manufacturer's warranty, which is usually expressed as a number of years and a minimum remaining capacity. Ask each provider for the warranty document of the exact model quoted, and check whether joining a virtual power plant changes the warranty terms.

Does a battery need its own spot on the switchboard?

A battery needs its own protection devices and isolation, and many older switchboards have no room for them. That is the main reason a provider asks for a switchboard photo. Upgrading the board can add to the cost, so it is worth knowing about before comparing quotes.

Will I still have a power bill after installing a battery?

Almost certainly. You still pay a daily supply charge to your retailer, and in winter a battery may not fill from solar on many days. A battery reduces the amount of power you buy in the evening; it rarely takes a grid connected home to zero.

Can I install a battery myself and claim the federal discount?

No. The battery must be fitted by an installer accredited by Solar Accreditation Australia with a battery endorsement, and in Victoria battery installation is prescribed electrical work that needs a licensed electrician and an independent inspection. A battery you fit yourself earns no certificates.
